Leader of French Socialist Party accused of sexual assault in U.S.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the leader of the French Socialist Party and chief of the International Monetary Fund, has been charged with sexual assault in the United States. If he is convicted on the charges, he could face a 25-year prison sentence. France's citizens are in shock and European financial markets took a turn after the announcement.

Strauss-Kahn is accused of sexually assaulting a maid employed by the hotel where he was staying near Times Square. A French journalist has also come forward with sexual assault allegations since Kahn was charged, saying that he sexually assaulted her in 2002.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the leader was denied bail because he is considered a flight risk. The sexual assault charges and scandal may bring an end to his presidential aspirations.

According to the Times, Strauss-Kahn has been known as somewhat of a womanizer, but some close to him say they doubt the rape charges. Other friends have suggested that the accusations are meant to undermine a run for the presidency and were orchestrated by political rivals.

On Tuesday, Strauss-Kahn's attorney entered a not guilty plea on all charges against him. Strauss-Kahn is charged with four felony counts. The felony charges include sexual abuse and attempted rape. He also pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor counts, including unlawful imprisonment.

Prosecutors say that the maid picked Strauss-Kahn out of a line-up and that they have DNA evidence from the maid and Strauss-Kahn. Prosecutors also say that Strauss-Kahn has a history of improper sexual conduct, according to the Times.
