Sex assault charges dropped against Strauss-Kahn

Prosecutors have decided to drop the sexual assault charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn. The charges were filed after a hotel maid accused Strauss-Kahn of sexually assaulting her last May. Prosecutors decided to drop the charges because they began to doubt the credibility of Strauss-Kahn's accuser.

The woman who accused Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault is a 32-year-old single mother who is a native of Guinea. Prosecutors said that, at first, they thought they had a strong case and arrested Strauss-Kahn before he could go back to France. Prosecutors had the accuser testify in front of a grand jury and the jurors indicted Strauss-Kahn on sexual assault charges.

After the indictment, however, prosecutors started to investigate the woman more and started to doubt they could bring a credible case against Strauss-Kahn. It turned out that the woman had lied to investigators when she repeated a false story that she had included in her application for political asylum in the U.S. from Guinea. The story was that she had been gang raped in Guinea, but it turned out to be untrue. The woman also lied about a dependent on her tax forms. Prosecutors also said they were not sure that the woman was not looking for money out of the accusation, which is what Strauss-Kahn and his attorneys maintained.

A recording of a phone conversation between the woman and her imprisoned fiancé has her mentioning Strauss-Kahn's great wealth. She filed a civil lawsuit against Strauss-Kahn, which has been portrayed as a way to make money off the case. Overall, according to the Los Angeles Times, the prosecutors decided that it was not worth trying to convince a jury that Strauss-Kahn was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt if they did not believe that.
