Alleged sexual assault results in $500,000 bail amount

Media reports about alleged occurrences of sexual assault are sure to catch the attention of many New Jersey residents, especially when they happen in the state. Since that is the case, the residents of Bergen County are most likely paying attention to the recent arrest of a man in Leonia involving an allegation of a sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl.

According to the reports, the 48-year-old male suspect allegedly offered the young girl a ride home in his car, although the reports were noticeably light on where this offer took place, why the young girl needed a ride, why she would accept a ride from a stranger and at exactly what time the sequence of events began in this case. The only detail about the timeframe that was reported was that the incident allegedly occurred in the evening hours of July 3.

The reports further indicate that the alleged victim called 911 upon escaping from the suspect after he attempted to assault her. The suspect was then arrested a few hours later on July 4. He will be facing a sexual assault charge and was being held on $500,000 bail after his arrest.

Sex offenses against children are some of the most serious charges a New Jersey resident can face, and the half-a-million dollar bail in this case shows just how serious the authorities view these types of allegations. A bail amount that high is somewhat unusual, and there must have been a few different factors beyond the details of the alleged incident to make a judicial officer set the amount that high, perhaps like a prior criminal history on the suspect's part. Nonetheless, any New Jersey criminal defense attorney would likely see that amount and think it should be much lower for anything other than a murder charge.
