New Jersey Teacher's Aide Admits to Having Sex With Student

A former teacher's aide pleaded guilty Thursday in a Morristown, New Jersey courtroom to sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a minor for having sex with one of her 17-year-old students in 2007. Danielle M. Hart, 36, was a teacher's aide at a private, Morristown-based high school for students with behavioral problems and learning disabilities. Hart admitted to committing one act of sexual penetration on the student on July 1, 2007 in Montville.

Hart testified before state Superior Court Judge Philip J. Maenza that she had endangered her student's welfare through the sexual conduct because she had a legal duty as his teacher to protect him. In New Jersey, a person must be 18 years old before they can legally consent to having sex with a person who has a position of authority or power over him or her.

Morris County Assistant Prosecutor LaJuan Tucker has recommended that Hart serve five years in state prison. Before sentencing, she will be evaluated by New Jersey's Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center. Her sentencing will take place August 13.

After she is released from prison, she will be on parole for at least 15 years. Under Megan's Law, she will also have to register her name and address with police to be added to the database of convicted sex offenders. As a convicted sex offender, she will be banned from teaching.

She is currently free on $100,000 bail.
