NJ Woman Recognized Census Worker as Sex Offender, Called Police

A New Jersey mother recently recognized a Census worker's face as one she had seen on New Jersey's database of convicted sex offenders and called police. The man was indeed a convicted sex offender, and he now faces charges of using a fake name and fake Social Security number to get the job. The astute woman believes that if she hadn't recognized the man and called police, he would still be going door-to-door.

The 47-year-old man, Frank Kuni, was convicted in 1996 of sexually assaulting one girl and having inappropriate contact with another girl. This sex offense conviction would have barred him from being employed by the Census Bureau. He used the fabricated name Jamie Shepard to get the job.

Kuni introduced himself as "Jamie" when he arrived at the Pennsauken, New Jersey, home of a mother and her toddler on May 4. She told reporters that she doesn't normally open her door for strangers when she's home alone, but she felt safe because the man was supposedly a government worker. As she was talking to him, she thought she recognized his face from the online database of registered sex offenders. She said his face had stuck out because he had 16 aliases, some quite memorable, such as "Toot Flynn."

The woman called the Pennsauken police and they took Kuni into custody, where he remains. The Census Bureau started training workers in April and sending them door-to-door May 1. Census officials said that Kuni had been fired in early May for failing a fingerprint check.
