DEA Ban on Fake Pot Fast Approaching

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced at the end of last month that they were imposing a temporary year-long ban on the five chemicals used to make synthetic marijuana. The DEA is required to give people a 30-day advance notice of emergency bans, so the actual ban will soon be in place. The ban will be in place for a year while the DEA studies the five chemicals to determine whether they are safe for human consumption or whether the chemicals and products should continue to be regulated as controlled substances.

Self-Published Author of Pedophilia Guidebook Arrested

A man who self-published a book that markets itself as a guide for pedophiles was arrested on Monday and faces obscenity charges. The 47-year-old man had posted the book for sale on last month, which prompted angry calls for the company to pull it from its website. Amazon eventually pulled the book, "The Pedophiles Guide to Love and Pleasure: A Child-Lover's Code of Conduct," off its virtual shelves two weeks later.

Report Finds High Marijuana Use Among Teens

A report issued last week by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that teen use of marijuana is on the rise. The report, "Monitoring the Future," found that teens are using marijuana at a rate higher than tobacco for the first time since 1981.

Willie Nelson Charged with Marijuana Possession

Country legend Willie Nelson is currently facing misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession. On a recent tour, his bus pulled into a routine checkpoint and an officer noticed a suspicious odor. A search of the bus turned up about four ounces of marijuana. Nelson was released from jail after posting a $2,500 bond.

Prosecution Begins Rebuttal Testimony in Elizabeth Smart Trial

The prosecution began rebuttal testimony today in the trial of Brian David Mitchell, the man accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart from her Salt Lake City bedroom in 2002 when she was 14-years-old and subsequently holding her captive for nine months. During her captivity, Smart lived and traveled with Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, and Mitchell sexually assaulted Smart almost every day. Mitchell is currently on trial for federal charges of kidnapping and transporting a minor across state lines.

Brian David Mitchell Kidnapping Trial: Defense Rests

On Thursday, Brian David Mitchell's defense attorneys rested their case in their client's kidnapping trial. Mitchell is charged with abducting Elizabeth Smart in 2002 when she was 14-years-old from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah. He and his wife, Wanda Barzee, then kept Smart captive for nine months. Over the course of her captivity, Mitchell sexually assaulted Smart almost daily.
