Willie Nelson won't have to sing in court for drug crime plea deal

Willie Nelson will be done with his misdemeanor marijuana possession charge after pleading guilty through the mail. He will also pay a small fine and court fees through the mail. Nelson was arrested after Border Patrol agents at a checkpoint in Texas searched his tour bus last November and found six ounces of marijuana. The marijuana later was re-weighed without drug paraphernalia and recorded at three ounces. Six ounces would have led to Nelson being charged with a felony drug crime.

The county attorney overseeing the case had been saying that he would include community service in the country singer's plea deal, community service that would consist of Nelson pleading guilty in person and also performing his hit, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" for everyone in the courtroom. The 78-year-old county attorney said that the 77-year-old country music legend was his favorite artist.

He was only kidding about the song, though. Nelson will plead through the mail like everyone else who travels through and is arrested for personal possession of marijuana.

Nelson is the co-chair of the advisory committee for the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). He is an active proponent of the legalization of marijuana. Nelson has been arrested before for marijuana possession and every time it really brings attention to his cause.
