Casey Anthony murder trial continues with defense witnesses

The Casey Anthony murder trial has been going on for almost a month now and the defense is still calling witnesses. On Friday, the defense called Casey's mother and brother to the stand for questioning. The defense is trying to introduce doubt into the prosecution's case. The prosecution tried to prove beyond a doubt that Casey murdered her two-year-old daughter by knocking her out with chloroform and suffocating her by placing duct tape over her mouth and nose. They say that Casey stored Caylee's body in her car for awhile, but later put it in some woods near the family home. Casey is on trial for charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and lying to investigators.

The defense has thoroughly challenged the prosecution's case. They say that Casey was sexually molested by her father as she grew up. They also claim that she was sexually abused by her brother to a lesser extent. The defense claims that the abuse led to a culture and habit of lying in the family. Casey's attorneys claim that Caylee accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool and her death was known to Casey and her father.

A big question for jurors would be why Casey wouldn't just call police when her daughter drowned, so the defense has had the challenge of providing a believable explanation for that behavior.

The defense called Casey's brother and mother to the stand on Friday. According to Reuters, Casey's brother testified that he was not told that Casey was pregnant until a few days before she gave birth, even though he had directly asked about it earlier. He said that he did not go to the hospital when Casey gave birth. The defense asked why and he said that it was because he was angry for being excluded from the information that she was pregnant. They asked if there was another reason, but he said no.

The defense has implied that investigators had reason to believe that Casey's brother could be the father of Caylee. Investigators tested DNA and found that neither Casey's brother nor her father was the father of Caylee, but the defense wanted to point out that investigators saw reason enough to want to find out.

Casey's mother testified on Thursday and Friday. She said that she was the one that had searched for "chloroform" on the Internet on the family's computer. The prosecution has claimed that the searches show that she was at work at the time, but she said that she was allowed to leave work without clocking out.
