Strauss-Kahn could have sex assault charges dropped soon

Dominique Strauss-Kahn may have the charges of sexual assault dropped next week. Prosecutors are still deciding whether to continue to pursue the charges at trial or to drop the charges, and they will decide by Tuesday when a court appearance is scheduled. Prosecutors have been unsure whether to pursue the charges because the credibility of the only witness besides Strauss-Kahn -- the woman who says she was sexually assaulted -- has been undermined during the investigation.

It has been reported widely that the woman changed her story about the alleged sexual assault more than once. She also reportedly told investigators about a time that she was gang raped in Guinea, but later recanted the story. She also reportedly made a strange phone call to a prison in another state and lied on tax forms.

Strauss-Kahn and his attorneys have said that the woman only reported the sexual assault after Strauss-Kahn refused to pay for the sexual encounter. Strauss-Kahn has acknowledged there was a sexual encounter, but he said that it was consensual. They have also portrayed the woman as one who tries to supplement her income with gifts or money from people at the hotel.

The 32-year-old woman is a single mother who moved to the U.S. from Guinea seven years ago. She has spoken to the media to tell her side of the story and says that she has been portrayed in the wrong light. She and her attorney have filed a civil lawsuit against Strauss-Kahn to try to collect damages for the alleged sexual assault. The woman's attorney accuses the district attorney's office and the media of severely damaging the woman's reputation through leaked information, innuendo and slander.
