As reported in a previous post, an actor who played a bit role on "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" was recently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his part in the kidnapping, gang rape and torture of a woman 1990. Joseph Hyungmin Son was not charged with the violent sex crime until 2008 after he violated his parole for a felony vandalism charge and was required to submit a sample of his DNA to authorities.
Soon after beginning his prison sentence, the man's 50-year-old cell mate in prison was found dead and authorities suspect that he was murdered by 40-year-old Son. Authorities are now investigating the matter further by performing an autopsy on the dead man, who had been serving a two-year prison sentence for failing to register as a sex offender. Some news organizations have reported recently that the man was a sex offender after being convicted of child molestation.
Son has not yet been charged in the crime as authorities are waiting to see the results of the investigation and autopsy. Son played one of Dr. Evil's henchman in the 1997 Austin Powers movie.
In 1990, Son and another man kidnapped a 19-year-old woman as she walked with her dog on Christmas Eve. They drove the woman to another town where they repeatedly raped and assaulted her physically and sexually in the car. The men threatened to kill the woman with a gun that they had with them and used in the crimes. They eventually let her go, badly beaten.
The other man was sent to prison for more than 17 years after pleading guilty last winter to rape, sodomy, kidnapping, forcible rape and forcible oral copulation. His prison sentence was enhanced because he was charged with committing rape while armed with a firearm.
