Police execute huge heroin bust in in New Jersey

Some of our readers may have seen previous posts here about the reported resurgence in popularity that heroin is experiencing among drug users throughout the country, including in New Jersey. Drug crimes involving heroin have not gone unnoticed by law enforcement agencies, and a recent report is evidence that New Jersey agencies in particular have staked out a strong position on attempting to hold back the wave of popularity that heroin is experiencing.

According to reports, a massive police operation in northern New Jersey recently resulted in over 300 arrests. Of particular interest, however, is that the operation did not target people who were alleged to be upper-level individuals associated with drug distribution, as is often the case. Instead, the operation focused on the individuals that the authorities believed were involved in street-level purchases and sales.

The breakdown in arrests, as many of our readers may have already suspected, was skewed in terms of how many of the individuals were reportedly making sales and those who were making purchases. It appears that 40 of the 325 arrestees will be facing drug dealing charges, while the remainder were suspected of being heroin users.

Law enforcement agencies do their best to interdict the sale of illegal drugs on New Jersey streets. But, while we all appreciate efforts to make our streets safe, there is always a danger that police officers may exceed the bounds of their authority in their enthusiasm to perform their jobs. When a New Jersey resident is facing drug charges, their criminal defense strategy should probably include an immediate review of the unique circumstances of their arrest. Any small detail may be the key to a successful challenge to either the manner of the arrest involved or the evidence seized.
