Ongoing child pornography enforcement operation nets 14 arrests

Most arrest reports on New Jersey's nightly news are mostly "reactionary" arrests, meaning that law enforcement officials react to calls that crimes have been committed and report to the scene of the alleged crime with sirens blaring and safety lights flashing. However, while this reactionary part of law enforcement is important, it "proactive" investigations into alleged crimes where many police officers spend the majority of their time.

According to reports, an ongoing proactive law enforcement operation known as "Operation Predator Alert" resulted in the arrest of 14 men on child pornography charges. While the early indications are that these men conducted their alleged illegal activity separate from each other, it appears that there is a common link: an internet network intended for file-swapping that was allegedly used by most of the suspects.

Some of our readers may know that child pornography laws in New Jersey were bolstered with more severe penalties by legislation that was passed in 2013. And, as a recent article pointed out, anyone who is facing a charge of possessing anything more than 25 images of child pornography could end up in prison for five years or more.

Any New Jersey criminal defense attorney would probably be able to tell our readers that the newly bolstered child pornography laws could be just the beginning of an ongoing effort to crackdown on these types of crimes. After all, there are probably very few - if any - lawmakers who would vote "no" to increasing the penalties for someone convicted on child pornography charges.

However, not allegations related to these types of crimes are accurate. Therefore, it is in an accused individual's best interest to speak with a competent criminal defense attorney who will do everything in his or her power to ensure the accused's legal rights are protected.
