Former NFL player faces sexual assault charges in New Jersey

The State of New Jersey, as most people know, does not have a professional football team. The state does, however, have two teams that play their games at the new stadium in the Meadowlands: the New York Jets and the New York Giants. Most New Jersey residents probably end up as a fan of one or the other of these teams. For those among us who are Giants fans, the name Luke Petitgout will probably ring a bell.

Unfortunately for Petitgout, himself a New Jersey resident, he made headlines recently not for what he accomplished in the past as a member of the Giants, but for his recent arrest on allegations of physical and sexual assault. According to the reports, the 38-year-old former NFL player was arrested in the early morning hours on November 4 after police were called to his home. The reports indicate that Petitgout is alleged to have assaulted a female victim at the residence.

Petitgout was not immediately released after the arrest, even though he posted a $50,000 bail. He apparently stirred up some other issues regarding a previous judicial order, which reports indicate may have to do with a restraining order.

With his fame provoking more media coverage than the average case, Petitgout's criminal defense strategy will need to account for the possibility that any potential jury in a trial may be biased by hearing and remembering the media reports surrounding his arrest. Any New Jersey criminal defense attorney would probably tell our readers that when this type of situation arises, an attempt to move the proceedings to another county may be an option to consider in order to combat the possibility of bias.
