Alleged sexual assault leads to the arrest of 5 suspects

When a parent in New Jersey sends their child off to college for the first time, that parent probably expects the child to have a little bit of fun as the transition from childhood to adulthood takes place, but for the most part they probably expect that the vast majority of the time will be focused on studying. No parent expects to get a phone call informing them that their child is facing felony-level sexual assault charges and the child needs a good criminal defense lawyer.

That is the scenario, unfortunately, that most likely played out recently when five male college students at William Paterson University were arrested on allegations that they participated in the sexual assault of another female student. According to the reports, the alleged sexual assault occurred in one of the dormitories on campus.

The alleged incident reportedly occurred on November 25. The initial reports were light on details, although the names and photos of all five suspects were released. The suspects are all 18-years-old.

Sexual assaults that occur on college campuses have received a higher amount of media coverage in the last few years. Many colleges and universities have had to face intense scrutiny amidst reports that there is a nonchalant approach to the issue of sexual assault. With the increase in scrutiny and attention on the issue, there will most likely be a higher number of alleged victims who will brave the press and come forward. As any New Jersey criminal defense attorney would probably be able to tell our readers, the case - and all the negative media coverage - is just beginning for the five suspects arrested in this recent incident.
